Welcoming a baby into the world is an exciting journey, but it also comes with its fair share of challenges. From navigating feedings to soothing fussy newborns, having the right products can make all the difference for new moms.
We spoke with Dr. Moorjani, MD, FAAP, is a board-certified pediatrician at Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children, to get expert recommendations on essential baby and mom-friendly products that ease the transition into parenthood.
Must-have tools for moms on the go
For busy moms who are always on the move, having the right gear is crucial. According to Dr. Noorjani, a baby carrier can be a game-changer.
“ I think one of the most helpful products for a new mom who is on the go is a comfortable baby carrier. For a newborn baby who isn’t able to control their neck yet, you want to look for a carrier that allows you to carry your baby facing inwards.”
A well-organized diaper bag is another essential for moms on the go.
“A comfortable bag that holds all of your baby products is a must too, since this bag will be holding diapers, wipes, nursing cover if you’re breastfeeding, or bottles and formula,” suggests Dr. Moorjani.
It’s also wise to be prepared for little messes along the way.
“I also suggest bringing an extra outfit or onesie for your baby, and maybe even an extra shirt/top for mom in case your baby is prone to spitting up.”
Baby essentials for a smooth transition into motherhood
The newborn stage comes with plenty of trial and error, but having a few key products can make things easier. Dr. Noorjani highlights the must-haves from day one:
“ Every newborn baby will need diapers, wipes, a safe place to sleep like a crib or bassinet, and a car seat appropriate for your baby’s size and age. These are the items you will definitely need on day 1.”
Other baby gear, like high chairs and strollers, can wait a bit.
“Other items, like high chairs and strollers, can wait a few days or weeks since most newborns and new moms will be at home at the beginning of the newborn period.”
When it comes to moms’ needs, postpartum essentials can vary from person to person.
“Every new mom will be a little different in her immediate post-partum needs. Some moms may enjoy self-care items like a new comfortable robe or pajamas, while others may enjoy the gift of help that could be in the form of gift cards for meal delivery or a friend coming over to help with routine house tasks while the new mom is bonding with her baby.”
Products that reduce physical strain on moms
Taking care of a newborn often means hours of feeding, rocking, and carrying, which can lead to physical fatigue. Dr. Noorjani recommends a nursing pillow to provide extra support.
“ One item that I found extremely helpful was a nursing pillow when my children were newborns. It helped provide support for my babies and helped relieve strain in my arms and back during breastfeeding.”
Breastfeeding can also come with its own set of challenges, and some simple tools can help ease discomfort.
Conclusion
While every mom’s needs are unique, having the right products can provide much-needed support in the early months of parenthood. Dr. Noorjani’s expert recommendations ensure that both moms and babies have the comfort and convenience they need to thrive.
