New year’s resolution ideas for parents (that you can actually keep!)
By Cradlewise Staff
A new year always brings out hopeful feelings. A fresh start. A time to create new habits—or change some of our less favorable ones.
Having a baby also means big changes—and during the first year, the changes just keep coming! Do whatever you need to do to keep your head above water, and be patient with yourself as you adjust to your new life. But if you’re looking for ways to control the chaos as you head into a new year of parenting, these (totally doable) resolutions just for parents may help make your days smoother and even more enjoyable.
1. I resolve not to fight with my partner during overnight feedings.
Listen, we’ve been there. You’re tired, the baby’s crying, your partner is tired, the baby’s crying. Tensions are high and sleep is low. It’s easy to snap. Take a deep breath, keep your voice to a whisper and save the big conversations for when everyone feels more rested—because things that feel important at 3 am are very rarely important at 9 am.
2. I resolve to prioritize at least one nutritious meal a day.
It’s easy to get caught up in the grind of life with a newborn, but parents cannot survive on granola bars alone! Food is fuel, and the more nutrient-dense meals you can eat, the more energy you’ll have and the better you’ll feel. Plus, birthing parents who are chestfeeding need to make sure they are keeping themselves well hydrated and fed to maintain their supply.
3. I resolve to ask for help.
Asking for help may not come easy, but you can’t do everything yourself. Identify your village (virtual or IRL) and lean on them. The key is asking for help before you are in absolute desperate need. (Life jackets are preloaded onto boats for a reason!) It’s good for you to get a break and rest, and good for your baby to bond with other people in their life.
4. I resolve to be in the pictures.
With all the cuteness that comes with babies, it’s easy to have phone storage full of baby photos. Even if you may not feel like you look your best, get in the pictures! Babies grow so fast. While you’re capturing all those joyful moments, make sure you get into a few pictures to look back on, too.
5. I resolve to put my phone down.
Social media can feel like a great way to connect and even learn hacks to make life easier, but it can also make you feel isolated, lonely and “less-than.” Consider setting time limits on your apps, only going online at certain times a day, or even deleting social apps from your phone temporarily. Try to be conscious of when your phone is doing more harm than good and allow yourself to take breaks.
6. I resolve to do what works for my family.
Chestfeeding. Formula feeding. Sleep training. Gentle parenting. Baby-led weaning. The list goes on and on …and everyone will have an opinion about the “best” way. As difficult as it can be sometimes (looking at you grandma, who insists a little whiskey on teething gums is just fine), you know what’s best for you, your baby, and your family. Follow your instincts, stick to what works for you, and do your best to shut out the noise.
