Cradewise’s breath rate monitor: The feature you’ve been asking for

Breath-Rate-Monitoring3x

As parents, ensuring your baby’s safety is your top priority, especially during their most vulnerable moments—like when they sleep. One of the ways in which you can do that is by monitoring their breath rate because your little one’s breath rate can provide invaluable reassurance, offering insight into their well-being and allowing us to respond quickly if necessary.

And we have good news for you regarding that—Cradlewise’s new Breath Rate Monitoring feature! Now, you can monitor your baby’s breathing, even while they sleep soundly.  Please note that this feature is currently in beta.

So let’s dive into how Cradlewise’s Breath Rate Monitor works and how it can support you in caring for your little one.

Understanding breath rate measurements

With Cradlewise, understanding your baby’s breath rate is simple. The breath rate measurement is based on the movement frequency of your baby’s torso, giving you a respirations per minute (RPM) number. Here’s how it works:

  • Real-Time Updates: The RPM is calculated from the average movement over the last 15 seconds and is updated every 15 seconds. This means you’re getting a nearly real-time snapshot of your baby’s breathing pattern.
  • What the Numbers Mean: You can refer to guidance from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to understand what typical healthy breath rates are for your baby’s age. This will help you know what to expect and when to be reassured.

How does Cradlewise measure the baby’s breath rate?

Cradlewise uses a combination of its camera and a depth sensor to track your baby’s breathing without needing any wearables or physical contact sensors. It just uses information from the crib’s built-in monitor. This way, your baby can sleep comfortably while you can feel assured about their safety.

How to check a baby’s breath rate on the Cradlewise app

Here are the steps to check your baby’s breath rate on the Cradlewise app:

  1. Open the Cradlewise app.
  2. Tap on the three dots at the bottom right corner of your Home screen to open the “Breath Rate Monitoring” section.
  3. Position the marker: Drag the marker on the app to align with your baby’s torso.
  4. Initiate monitoring: Tap “Start Monitoring” to begin.
  5. Monitor the Breath Rate: The app will start measuring your baby’s breath rate.

And that’s it! The crib’s camera and depth sensor will then take over, and will provide you your baby’s accurate breath rate.

How to ensure that the Breath Rate Monitoring is accurate

To achieve the most accurate breath rate monitoring for your baby, follow these guidelines:

  • Camera Positioning: Ensure the camera has a clear, unobstructed view of your baby’s torso. Position the marker accurately on the app to align with the baby’s torso.
  • Lighting: Maintain a well-lit crib area to facilitate precise monitoring.
  • Crib Environment: Keep the crib free from blankets, toys, or any other objects that could interfere with the monitoring process.

Why does my breath monitor show “Baby is moving”?

The breath rate measurement requires the baby to be still for an accurate reading. When your baby stirs during sleep, you’ll see the monitor indicate, “Baby is moving.” Once your baby settles down, the monitor will automatically resume detection, provided the parent or caregiver hasn’t manually ended the breath session.

Note: It’s important to know that it’s not a medical device, so it shouldn’t be used to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any diseases or health issues, including Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Cradlewise should never replace adult supervision or consulting with medical professionals. Always follow safe sleep practices for your baby’s well-being.
